Unusual Study Abroad Programs

There are a lot of fantastic study abroad programs.

You don’t have to settle for the traditional programs. There are many specialized programs also. I will list just a few programs on this website, but a google search such pull up tons of alternatives the the usual programs out there.

I don’t have personal knowledge of any of these programs, so you will have to do your own due diligence. But here are a few programs to get you started.

LeapYear states that their students can enjoy “The Most Unique Year of College on the Planet”.  They have a lot of unusual and intriguing programs.

  • Science / Medical / Engineering Study Abroad: 
JHU has tons of engineering Study Abroad programs -  Some subjects of science and engineering Study abroad represented are Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Biophysics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Geography, Materials Science, Mathematical Sciences, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, and Physics.

  • Law Study Abroad – Find out about study abroad opportunities suggested for current law school students or for those planning a law school career. Of course, if you are currently in law school, you should definitely check with your law school to see which programs the support and will give academic credit for. You want to be on
the safe side. But here are a few programs to get you started. There are programs in Switzerland, Austrailia, Chile, Argentina, France, Spain, U.K., Netherlands, Turkey, Russia, Israel, Polamd, Amsterland, Germany, China, Hong Kong, Hungary, South Africa, Ghana, Ireland, Italy, Croatia, Costa Rica, and more.

  • Semester at Sea is a program of the University of Virginia.  They visit some of the following locations: Nassau, Bahamas; Cadiz, Spain; Casablanca, Morocco; Walvis Bay, Namibia; Cape Town, South Africa; Port Louis, Mauritius; Chennai, India; Laem Chabang (Bangkok), Thailand; Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam; Hong Kong/Shanghai, China; Kobe/Yokohama, Japan; Honolulu, Hawaii; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala (Antigua, Guatemala City); and Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

  • Sea Semester - This program is offered by the SEA Education Association and combines study of the ocean and sailing. It’s based in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Their typical destinations include the waters of the North Atlantic, the Caribbean Sea, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Honduras, French Polynesia, Hawaii, Mexico, Canada, and the Palmyra Atoll.  

  • Seamester - They provide a valuable shipboard experiential learning environment. In addition to study abroad, you can earn college credits and work toward certifications in sailing and scuba diving. They circumnavigate the globe span seven continents with various destinations which may include: the Lesser Antilles & Caribbean Sea (Caribbean Lesser Antilles, British Virgin  Island, Grenada, Leeward Islands, Antigua, Dominca; the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean (France, Corsica, Sardinia, Italy, Spain, Africa, Brazil);  Pacific Ocean and Society Islands (Tahiti, Galapagos Islands, ;  Australia and Indonesia (Great Barrier Reef, Thailand, Bali, Singapore); Asia, the Indian Ocean, and the Suez Canal (Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Borneo, Bali, Greece, The Maldives, and Egypt)
