My 10 Best Reasons to Learn Portuguese!

There are always plenty of reasons to learn Portuguese.

Portuguese sounds beautiful, and it looks so good on your resume. But, what are 10 concrete reasons for someone to learn this beautiful language? Well, I’ll tell you!
1.    Portuguese is one of the major languages in the world today! And it is spoken in Brazil, a country with some of the most beautiful people on the planet. It is also the official language or it is spoken by a large number of citizens of the following countries:

  • Angola
  • Brazil
  • Cape Verde
  • East Timor
  • Guinea-Bissau
  • Mozambique
  • Portugal
  • Sao Tome and Principe
2.    If you know Portuguese, it is then easier to learn other romance languages, such as French, Spanish, and Italian.  It is spoken by about 200,000,000 people throughout the world.

3.    Jobs! Being able to speak more than one language always looks good on a resume, so why not learn one of the most important languages in the world?

4.    The more you know, the better! What better reason to learn a language than just because learning is fun? And it is even more fun when you learn a language with other people!  It can be a good way to socialize. So, get some of your friend together and learn Portuguese.  That way, you will have someone to speak the language with.

5.    Learning Portuguese will help give you an insight into the cultures of Brazil and Portugal.

6.    Another great reason is cooking. For those of us who are into cooking, sometimes knowing another language means we can read recipes from other nations … traditional and rich recipes whose originality could be lost in translation.

7.    One of the 10 best reasons to learn Portuguese is because you want to vacation or relocate to Brazil or Portugal. Portugal and Brazil have some of the most beautiful vacation spots in the world. Several years ago, I vacationed on the beautiful island of Madeira [one of the autonomous regions of Portugal], just off the northwest coast of Africa. I had a terrific time.  Everyone I know who has ever gone to Brazil just loved it.  The beaches of both countries are beautiful and fun. Knowing Portuguese would make the enjoyment many times better.

8.    Learning another language opens the floodgates on what you can read. Wouldn't it be great to be able to read “The Three Musketeers” in the original French or Dante in the original Italian? Learning another language allows you to do just that. In addition, studies have shown that learning additional languages makes us smarter.

9.    Just for the fun of it. Learning Portuguese can help divert you from the stress and monotony of daily life. The challenge of learning a new language can give you something else to think about other than your daily chores and responsibilities while at the same time giving you a sense of achievement.

10.    Learn Portuguese because you want to study abroad in Brazil or work abroad in Portugal.  I interviewed a student who had marvelous study abroad in Brazil adventures.  Of course, he learned to speak Portuguese.

The reasons for learning Portuguese are many, as you can see, and they vary greatly.  So, why not give it a try?  I love Brazil. Amo o Brasil.
