Many westerners think that Chinese (Mandarin) is a very difficult language to learn.  Accordingly, they approach the study of Chinese (Mandarin) with fear and trepidation.

I don’t really classify languages as easy or difficult. 
Some languages may be quite different from your native language, but with the proper desire and motivation, you can learn any language.  After all, children learn how to speak whichever language they hear.  You don’t hear Chinese children (in China) say, “I can’t learn this language. It’s too hard!”  So let’s presume that you can learn any language.
